What is a Boho Hippy Home?

•

Boho

Boho because the hippy lifestyle reminds me of Rumi and the Sufi Poets/Mystics who have been role models to me. They traveled in caravans around the Middle East during the early 13th century. Gypsies became known as bohemians and artists who lived unconventional lifestyles which then morphed into the Hippy culture of the 60’s. Deadheads traveling in modern day caravans only trading their mules and wagons for VW Busses and tents.

Hippy

When I turned 14 hippy culture was making a comeback. There was a headshop in my town called Thread Heads that sold mostly hippy wears. Think brightly colored T-shirts saturated with color, hacky-sacks, incense, beaded necklaces and the like. Mexicali Blues, a hippy shop in Maine, is pretty similar to what I remember Thread Heads looking like. This was also where I felt most comfortable, most at home and a sense of belonging.

It was the saturated colors and positive messages that made me feel peace and at ease. I’m also a Phish and Grateful Dead fan (maybe the only one who doesn’t smoke pot:) and the elements of their gypsy lifestyle are in line with the comfort I feel being steeped in the colors, culture and music.
